Christyn Rebmann is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), in Kamloops, British Columbia. While taking a Curating course, Christyn was given the opportunity to co-curate a juried exhibition, Formation Inspiration at the Salmon Arm Arts Centre in 2018. This exhibition included students’ artwork and focused on the different forms that inspiration can take across a range of artists’ work. A year later, she was given another opportunity to become a “Research Coach,” mentoring other visual arts students to realize “Home”, an exhibition at the TRU Art Gallery, associated with the TRU Undergraduate Research and Innovation Conference in 2019. By working closely with the students in the course along with the professor, Donald Lawrence, she used the theme of “Home” and what that means to different people to curate an exhibition and accompanying catalogue that exemplified this idea. Christyn also became involved with the Kamloops Art Gallery, as an installation assistant for gallery-based and off-site projects. Her artwork consists mainly of sculptural and installation pieces, along with interests in painting and printmaking. In her current body of work, Body Language, Christyn uses tie wire and rebar to create figurative pieces that deal with the expression of emotion through movement and body language. The use of tie wire to form the figures creates a swirling, wrapped texture that appears both as the muscle and sinew under the skin, but also the mess of emotions and thoughts that make people who they are. Christyn’s prints are usually smaller in scale and utilize fine detail to encourage the viewer to look closer and have a more intimate experience with the piece. This understanding of body language and the emotions of others is a big part of Christyn’s artmaking, and this is present throughout her work in sculpture, painting, and printmaking. After relocating to the Kootenays in 2020, she became the Executive Director of the Cranbrook and District Arts Council where she furthers their mission to artistically and culturally enrich the community, support and promote emerging and established artists, educate residents in the visual arts, and create a safe space for all ages and abilities to socialize and learn new skills.
